Joseonwangjosillok is a corpus of historical annals covering some 470 year period from Taejo, the founding monarch, to King Cheoljong. These annals, that yielded a total of 888 volumes of 1,893 parts, were initially called Taejosillok or "Annals of Taejo", and were commissioned by King Taejong after the demise of King Taejo. Beginning with Sejongsillok or "Annals of Sejong," the life story of each and every king was stored at four different conservatories for historical records: Chunchugwan, Chungju, Jeonju, and Seongju. All conservatories were however burnt down during the Imjin Japanese Invasion, except the one in Jeonju. The lost books were replaced after the war, making the total 5 copies including the surviving copy at Jeonju Conservatory. These duplicates were again distributed to different record conservatories across the country.
The volumes currently preserved in Kyujanggak are the Jeonju copies, which had survived the fire during the war. The total number of volumes of Joseonwangjosillok reaches 2,077, if counting in replicates from Mt. Taekbaeksan Conservatory and from Mt. Odaesan Conservatory. The original volumes have been included in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register since October 1997.
