Jinjuseong Fortress (Joseon Period)

Gyeongsangnam-do’da önemli bir yer olan Jinju Kalesi, Üç Krallık Dönemi’ndeki Baekje altında, Geoyeolseong ya da Geotaseong olarak adlandırılırdı.

Üç krallık döneminin birleştirilmesinden sonra Silla’nın Kralı Munmu, bölgedeki başşehir olarak Jinju’ya sahipti.

O zamandan bu yana, kalenin adı Joseon Kralı Seongjong'un 14. yılında, şu anki Jinju olana kadar değiştirildi.

Jinju, son Goryeo Krallığı tarafından, Japon düşmanlarına karşı bir askeri üs olarak kullanıldı ve Kral Seonjo’nun 25. yılında (1592) meydana gelen Japon Saldırısı sırasında, düşman askerlerinin Jeolla-do’ya girmelerini önlemede büyük bir rol oynamıştır.

Jinju Kalesi Savaşı, Haengju Dağ Kalesi ile birlikte büyük zaferlerden birisidir ve Hansando Savaşı, çok sayıda JKore birliğinin ve Japon düşmanlarının ölümüyle bilinmektedir.

İkinci Jinju Kalesi Savaşı’na yaklaşık altmış bin asker birlikte katıldı ve son kez Japon ordusuna karşı savaştı, ama hepsi bu savaşta öldü.

Aynı zamanda burası, kendisini ve bir Japon komutanı öldürmek için Namgang Nehri'ne atlayan bir gisaeng (dans ve şarkılar ile erkekleri eğlendiren bir kadın) olan Nongae hikayesi de ünlü oldu. Joseon Hanedanlığı döneminde, şehrin kale tarzını göstermek için bir temsilci olarak görülen Jinju Kalesi’nin dairesel iç duvarı 600 metreden ve dairesel dış duvarı ise 4 kilometreden oluşuyordu.

Kalenin kuzey kesiminde, insanların kaleye yaklaşmaları için geçtikleri üç göl bulunmaktaydı.

Dış duvarın etrafında, Namgang Nehri’yle bağlantılı bir göl vardı.

Kale çevresinde, Seonsa Dönemi kalıntıları ile siteler ve eski mezarlar yer alırdı.

Şu an Jinju Ulusal Müzesi, kalenin içinde durmaktadır.

Jinju Fortress that was important place of Gyeongsangnam-do was called Geoyeolseong or Geotaseong under Baekje in Three Kingdom period.

After King Munmu of Silla unified the three kingdoms, he had Jinju as the capital in this region.

Since then, the name had been changed until it had the current name Jinju in the 14th year of King Seongjong of Joseon.

Jinju used to be a military base against Japanese enemy in the late Goryeo Dynasty, and it played a great role to protect them from going into Jeolla-do during the Japanese Aggression in the 25th year of King Seonjo (1592).

The Jinju Fortress Battle, one of the great victories along with the Haengju Mountain Fortress battle and Hansando Battle, was famous for mowing down a great number of Japanese enemies with a few Korean forces.

In the second Jinju Fortress Battle, about sixty thousand soldiers joined together and fought to the last against the Japanese military, but all died in the war.

It was also famous for the story of Nongae who was a gisaeng, a hostess trained in entertaining men with dance and song, jumped with a Japanese commander into the Namgang River to kill him and herself. Jinju Fortress, a representative castle to show the style of town castle during the Joseon Dynasty, consisted of 600 meters of circular inner wall and 4 kilometers round of the outer wall.

In the northern part of fortress, there were three lakes that were connected that people crossed them to approach the fortress.

Around the outer wall, there was a lake connected to the Namgang River.

Around the fortress, there were a number of old graves and sites with relics from the Seonsa period.

Now, the Jinju National Museum stands in the fortress.
