Jeongan Bamtori Village's Chili

Jeongan Bamtori Village's Chili

English

The home of Gochu is Central and South America. According to Lee Sugwang's 「Jibongyuseol」, Gochu called Waegaecho was imported from Japan during the Japanese Invasion of Korea.
And according to「Sanrimgyeongje」, only two or three ones among about 15 kinds of Gimchi-making methods used Gochu. From this fact we can infer that the habit to make Gimchi by using Gochu as its ingredient was formed in the early 1700s. From old times, people used to fix Gochu as the symbol of male together with charcoal in a straw rope and hanged it at the entrance of their home, while they were not allowed in ancestral rites or temples for the reason that they prevent spirits.
