A unique marine park, the Hallyeo Maritime National Park, better known as the Hallyeosudo Waterway, is a 93-mile-long waterway running from Geoje Island, southwest of Busan, to Yeosu in the west.
This park is dotted with 400 islands and islets, many uninhabited. The irregular coastline has created unusual rock formations and caves, providing for spectacular cruises. Apart from the natural scenery, much of the interest in the area is historical, for it was here that Korea’s famed Admiral Yi Sun-sin defeated the Japanese in several sea battles during the Japanese invasions of the late 16th century. He is noted for first using ironclad naval vessels in battle. Though greatly outnumbered, his “turtle ships” (geobukseon), outfitted with 26 cannons on each side, proved superior to the Japanese vessels. Tongyeong was the place of Admiral Yi’s headquarters, and now is charming port city with a pleasant tourist hotel, fine seafood restaurants, and plenty of watersports facilities.
