Organization
Each high court consists of a chief judge and other judges. Currently, the high courts are located in five major cities of Korea - Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju and Daejeon. In each high court, there is an administration bureau for internal management and supervision of court officials.
The Gwangju High Court has the appellate jurisdiction over judgments or rulings rendered by a panel of three judges of the Jeju District Court. Since Jeju is an island apart from the peninsula, the Supreme Court established a panel of Gwangju High Court at Jeju District Court for the convenience of the litigant parties residing in Jeju Island.
Jurisdiction
High courts hear appeals from judgments or rulings rendered either by a panel of three judges of the district courts or the family court, or by the administrative court. High courts also hear appeals from judgments or rulings in civil cases rendered by a single judge of the district courts or branch courts when the amount in controversy exceeds 50 million Korean won (approximately US$53,902.00 as of June 2007). The jurisdiction of high courts is exercised by a panel of three judges.
