Mayıs 1980’de o zamanki askeri rejime karşı Gwangju halk ayaklanmasının merkezi olmuş, Gwangju 1980 ve 90’ların başlarına kadar devam eden Güney Kore demokratikleşme hareketinin mihenk taşı olmuştur.

Gwangju Bienali 1995 yılında başladığı zaman Doğu Asya'nın bu türdeki ilk sanat etkinliğiydi.

Gwangju Metropol Şehri bir sanat, kültür şehridir. Ayrıca ileri teknoloji endüstrileri ve yeşil enerji çalışmalarının yürütüldüğü bir şehirdir. Bu önemde bir şehrin iki farklı bineali var. Biri 1995’te oluşturulmuş modern sana festivali. Diğeri ise 2004’te oluşturulmuş tasarım bineali. Gwangju Bienali Kurumu, 2004 yılında başlatılan Gwangju Tasarım Bienali’ne de ev sahipliği yapmaktadır.

Sivil ayaklanma ve 1980 Gwangju Demokratikleşme Hareketi anısına 1995’de başlatılan çağdaş sanat Gwangju Bienali Asya’nın en eski ve en prestijlisi olup iki yılda bir düzenlenmektedir.

Massimiliano Gioni, Kerry Brougher, Sukwon Chang, Okwui Enwezor, Charles Esche, Hou Hanru, Honghee Kim, Yongwoo Lee, Youngchul Lee, Kwangsoo Oh, Wankyoung Sung and Harald Szeemann dahil olmak üzere önceki küratörlerin dahilinde uluslar arası çağdaş sanat Gwangju Bienali bir deviri vurgular hale gelmiştir.

Gwangju Bienali’nin ev sahipliğini Gwangju Bienali Vakfı ve Gwangju Büyükşehir gururla yapmaktadır.

The site of the Gwangju people’s uprising against the then military regime in May 1980, Gwangju has become a touchstone for the history of the South Korean democratization movement which continued through the 1980s and early 90s.

The victims of the city and their role in the democracy movement are given for the reason as to why Gwangju has been honored with such a prestige-laden (and costly) festival. ,The Metropolitan City of Gwangju is a city of art, culture and high-tech industries with photonics and green energy businesses. As a city of art and culture, Gwangju and Gwangju biennale Foundation host two different biennales including international contemporary art festival, Gwangju Biennale and Gwangju Design Biennale established in 1995 and 2004.This historical background plays a role crucial to the identity of the Biennale, and is sometimes directly paid tribute to in the program, i.e. in special exhibitions.

As stated in a brochure from the organizers, the Biennale aims to contribute to "blurring distinctions between center and margin" as well as to a "break from the past of discrimination and exclusivity". The criticism of the established international art market cannot be overlooked.

When the Gwangju Biennale began in 1995, it was the first such art event in East Asia.

The Gwangju Biennale Foundation also hosts the Gwangju Design Biennale, founded in 2004.

Founded in 1995 in memory of the civil uprising and the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement, the Gwangju Biennale is Asia’s oldest and most prestigious biennial of contemporary art. Under the helm of previous curators - including Massimiliano Gioni, Kerry Brougher, Sukwon Chang, Okwui Enwezor, Charles Esche, Hou Hanru, Honghee Kim, Yongwoo Lee, Youngchul Lee, Kwangsoo Oh, Wankyoung Sung and Harald Szeemann - the Gwangju Biennale has established itself as a highlight of the international contemporary art biennale circuit.

The Gwangju Biennale is proudly hosted by the Gwangju Biennale Foundation and The Metropolitan City of Gwangju.
