Geomungo Factory, genç üniversite öğrencilerinden oluşan bir grubun, hikayelerini ve müziklerini paylaşmak için toplanmaları ile birlikte ilk kez 2007 yılında bir araya gelmiştir. Biography
Geomungo Factory first came together in 2007 when a group of young college students began meeting to share their stories and music with each other. Their enthusiasm centered on their instrument of choice, the Geomungo, a six string Korean zither. Their passion for traditional Korean music would soon lead them on a path of exploration with a clear sense of mission: to present the fascinating sound of the Geomungo to a global audience. As the group’s name implies, Geomungo Factory is ready to give their fans a totally immersive Geomungo experience, with music ranging from the traditional to the contemporary.
Geomungo Factory invites their listeners to join them on a journey of discovery and savor the charms of traditional Korean music, experiencing for themselves its unique spiritual and meditative essence. This desire has found creative expression in a variety of settings and styles, from classical demonstrations to experimental fusions of East and West, Ancient and Modern. The music of Geomungo Factory preserves the aesthetic beauty of Korean music, while re-shaping and transforming it into exciting new forms.
All of the members of Geomungo Factory have studied the traditional Korean art of Geomungo performance, and have embraced the extraordinary musical possibilities of this ancient and noble instrument. Their cultural journey began as a personal exploration of the Sanjo, a demanding musical form that requires the utmost concentration and virtuosity from those who would aspire to become a master. Ultimately, the group released their first album: a highly individual interpretation of Sanjo music, juxtaposing the legacy of past masters with a bold, youthful approach – simultaneously honoring and redefining the tradition of Sanjo performance.
Geomungo Factory is on a mission – to bring the sound of Korea’s most noble instrument to music lovers around the world, even if this requires designing and creating entirely new instruments. To accomplish this, Geomungo Factory truly IS a “Factory,” for in addition to playing the classical Geomungo (a design dating back to the 4th century), Geomungo Factory has built a number of entirely new instruments to realize their creative vision: the Damhyeon-geum, a mini-Geomungo that can be played like a guitar; the Cello Geomungo, whose bridges and fret boards have been altered to accommodate playing with a bow as well as the Xylophone Geomungo, and the Electric Geomungo. These innovations have established Geomungo Factory as one of the vanguard voices in Korea’s contemporary creative traditional music scene.
