Many romanticize about taking a ferry to one of Korea’s remote islands, but the time and effort required can also be used as an excuse to hesitate on making plans.
For those with the tendency to get cold feet, there’s no better option than Geoje Island in South Gyeongsang. The spot offers the best of both worlds: It’s now connected to Busan by the Geoga Bridge, making it easily accessible, while also offering access to many smaller, scenic islands by short ferry ride.
The island is located partly within the Hallyeohaesang Marine National Park, which is widely known around Korea for its rocky islands and clear water.
The area is full of unique views. Similar to climbing to the top of mountains and seeing the peaks of other ranges, here, the outlines of other islands are visible almost everywhere you look.
Geoje, which is Korea’s second-largest island after Jeju, has attracted relatively few visitors despite its amazing scenery because it hasn’t been as tourist-friendly as other major travel destinations around the country.
“It is important to promote what each region in the country has to offer to Koreans so that they explore their own country rather than planning a trip to an overseas destination,” said Kim Jong, vice minister of culture, sports, and tourism.
“Making better travel infrastructure can help bring in more people to the island as it increases convenience and allows them to use their time here more efficiently,” said Kim during a recent visit to the island with reporters.
One of Geoje’s most unique features is its gigantic windmill atop “Windy Hill,” which looks straight out of the Netherlands.
The trail around the windmill and down to the sea is well-paved and boasts an international feel.
It doesn’t have any big trees that offer shade, but visitors don’t have to worry about getting hot. Just as its name suggests, there’s a constant breeze on the hill that keeps things cool and allows visitors to spend as much time as they need to take the perfect selfie with the windmill in the background.
For those whose tiredness or discomfort can’t be cured by the breeze, Geoje also boasts many different beaches.
