Folk Singer Opens up His Slice of Heaven: Lee Jang-hee’s Garden Is Now An Art Center for Visitors to Enjoy

Halk Müziği Sanatçısı Kendi Cennetinin Kapılarını Aralıyor: Lee Jang-hee’nin Bahçesi Artık Ziyaretçiler için Bir Sanat Merkezi


Ulleung Adasında bir sanat merkezi olan Ulleung Heaven, halk müziği sanatçısı Lee Jang-hee’nin 8 Mayıs’ta verdiği bir konserle birlikte açılmıştır. Sanat merkezi Lee’nin bağışladığı büyük bir bahçe üzerine Kuzey Gyeongsang hükümeti tarafından inşa edilmiştir. Mavi çatılı küçük ev Lee’nin 2004’den beri yaşadığı evdir.

“Hayat beni yorgun düşürebilir fakat sevdiğim birisi olduğu için endişelenmeme gerek yok. Sağanak yağışlar hayatımı tehdit edebilir ama Ulleungdo yaşadığım yer olduğu için endişelenmeme gerek yok... Ulleungdo benim cennetim. Ben öldüğümde beni Ulleungdo’ya getirin. Beni Ulleungdo’ya gömün.”

Bu sözler 71 yaşındaki şarkıcı ve söz yazarı Lee Jang-hee’nin 2004’te yaşamaya başladığı Ulleungdo’daki “nihai evi”ne karşı sevgisini ifade etmek üzere yazdığı en son ki şarkısından birkaç dize.

Şarkının çıkışından 14 yıl sonra ilk kez, şarkıcı evinin önündeki 1,652 m2’lik alana inşa edilen Ulleung Heaven adındaki adanın en yüksek kaliteli sanat merkezinin açılışını duyurmak için burada fanlarının ve komşularının önünde şarkısını söyledi.

4 yıl önce o dönemki Kuzey Gyeongsang eyaleti yöneticisi Lee’yi ziyaret edip ziyaretçilere ve burada yaşayanlara yönelik düzenlenecek kültürel etkinlikler için burada bir sanat merkezi kurmak amacıyla içerisinde bir gölet ve heybetli bir tepe olan bu büyük bahçeyi satıp satamayacağını sordu. Lee kendini doğayla izole etmek ve huzurun ve sessizliğin tadını çıkarmak için Ulleung Adasına taşınmayı ve orada yaşamayı tercih ederken, bu alanı bağışlamaya karar verdi, böylelikle, “(onun) bu kadar çok sevdiği adada müzik yankılanabilir”.


Lee (ortada) 15 Mayıs’ta Ulleung Heaven’da sanat merkezinin açılışını kutlamak için en yakın arkadaşları Jo Won-ik (sağda) ve Kang Geun-sik (solda) ile birlikte performans sergiliyor.

Lee 15 Mayıs’ta sanat merkezindeki üçüncü konserini gerçekleştirdi. Halk müziği sanatçısı ile arkadaşları Jo Won-ik (kontrabasta) ve Kang Geun-sik’le (elektro gitarda) birlikte 12 şarkı çaldı ve bunlardan çoğu Lee’nin 70-80’li yıllardaki hit şarkılarından oluşuyordu. Bu üç müzisyen 70-80’li yıllarda Kore’de oldukça popüler olan eski halk müziği grubu C’est Si Bon’u oluşturan üyelerdir.

Lee’nin adı ve C’est Si Bon şu anki Koreli gençler için tanıdık gelmeyebilir ama Lee ve birçok şarkısı çoğu halk müziği hayranı için büyük bir hitti. Sanatçı “I Will Give You Everything” (1974), “Goodbye Sadness” (1980), “Who Am I” (1988) gibi daha birçok şarkıyı kendisi için yazmış. Diğer yandan popüler halk müziği sanatçısı Song Chang-sik için “It’s Raining Outside the Window” (1971), Jo Young-nam için “Unlit Window” (1971) ve dansçı ve şarkıcı Kim Wan-sun için “Let’s Now Forget” (1988) şarkılarını yazmıştır.

Lee’nin geçmişteki popülaritesinin bir kanıtı olarak son üç konserinin tüm biletleri satıldı ve Lee’nin yıllar sonra gerçekleştirdiği ilk canlı performansını izlemeye birçok turist ve ada sakini geldi.

Lee konser sırasında: “Geçtiğimiz 40 yıl boyunca müziğe olan tutkumu sizlere yansıtıyorum. Ancak bunu cennet dediğim bu adada en yakın arkadaşlarımla tekrar yaptığım için çok mutluyum” dedi.

Sanat merkezinin ikinci katı ziyaretçilerin Kore halk müziği tarihini öğrenebilecekleri bir sergi salonu olarak kullanılıyor.

Lee’nin üçlü grubu sanat merkezinin açılışını kutlamak amacıyla Eylül'e kadar haftada üç kez (Salı, Perşembe ve Cumartesi) performans sergileyecek ve sonra başka etkinliklerin yapılabileceği bir alan olarak resmi bir şekilde açılacak.

Ulleung Heaven, an art center on Ulleung Island, North Gyeongsang, opened on May 8 with a concert from folk singer Lee Jang-hee. The art center was built by the North Gyeongsang provincial government on a vast garden donated by Lee. The small house with a blue roof is Lee’s house, where he has lived since 2004.

ULLEUNG ISLAND, North Gyeongsang - “Life can make me weary, but I don’t have to worry as I have someone I love. Rainstorms can threaten my life, but I don’t have to worry as Ulleungdo is where I live … Ulleungdo is my heaven. Please send me to Ulleungdo when I die. Please bury me in Ulleungdo when I die.”

These are some of the lyrics to 71-year-old singer and songwriter Lee Jang-hee’s latest song that he wrote to express his affection towards his “final home” on Ulleungdo, or Ulleung Island, where he settled down in 2004.

On May 8, 14 years after its release, the singer performed the song for the first time on the island in front of his fans and neighbors at the new art center, named Ulleung Heaven, to signal the opening of the island’s very first high-end cultural art center built in the 1,652-square-meter (0.4-acre) garden in front of his house.

Four years ago, the then-governor of North Gyeongsang visited Lee, asking if he was willing to sell the grand basin garden that houses a pond and a majestic peak so that the provincial office could establish an art center for visitors and residents to enjoy cultural events that could be organized there. While Lee chose to move to Ulleung Island and live there in order to isolate himself in the nature and enjoy peace and quiet, he decided to donate the land so that “music could resonate from an island [he] loves so dearly.”

Lee held his third concert at the art center on May 15. The folk singer and his two friends, Jo Won-ik on double bass and Kang Geun-sik on electric guitar, performed about a dozen songs together, most of which were Lee’s hits from the 1970s and 80s. The three musicians used to belong to the folk band C’est Si Bon, which was quite popular in Korea during the ’70s and ’80s.

Lee’s name and C’est Si Bon may be unfamiliar to younger Koreans, but Lee and many of his songs were huge hits for many folk pop fans. He wrote songs for himself like “I Will Give You Everything” (1974), “Goodbye Sadness” (1980), “Who Am I” (1988), among many others. For others, he wrote “It’s Raining Outside the Window” (1971) for popular folk singer Song Chang-sik, “Unlit Window” (1971) for Jo Young-nam as well as dancer and singer Kim Wan-sun’s “Let’s Now Forget” (1988).

As a testament to Lee’s popularity in the past, Lee’s concert last week was sold out, as were his two previous ones, filled with tourists and residents who came to see the singer perform live for the first time in many years.

“I’ve been neglecting my passion for music for the past 40 years,” said Lee during the concert. “But I’m so happy to be doing it again on this island I call heaven with two of my best friends.”

The second floor of the art center is an exhibition hall where visitors can learn about the history of Korean folk music.

Lee’s trio will perform three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, until September to celebrate the opening of the art center and then officially open up the venue for other events.
