Doljanchi (돌잔치) / Child's First Birthday

Dol veya Doljanchi bebeğin ilk doğum gününü kutlayan Kore geleneğidir. Bu tören refah bir gelecekle çocuğu kutsar ve Kore'de büyük bir önem kazanmıştır. Doğum günü bebekleri bir hanbok ve geleneksel bir şapka giyer: kız bebekler için jobawi yada gulle, erkek bebekler için bokgeon yada hogeon.
Eskiden gerek tıbbi eksiklik, gerekse ağır tabiat şartları yüzünden doğan birçok bebek hastalıklardan ölürdü. Bebekler daha ilk doğum günlerini geçiremeden ölmekteydi. Ancak daha sonraları ilk doğum günlerini gören bebeklerin sayısında artış oldu ve bu durum aileleri çok memnun etti. Dahası çocukların 100. günleri de (Baek-il) kutlanmıştır. Ancak bu kutlama birçok bölgede Tol'a göre sönük kalmaktadır.
Tol'un Kore'de 2 anlamı vardır. Ortak anlamı, bir çocuğun ilk doğum günüdür. Ayrıca doğum günlerinin tanımlanması şekliyle de kullanılır. Bir çocuğun ilk doğum gününe Chut-tol, ikinci doğum gününe Du-tol, üçüncü doğum gününe Seo-tol denilir.
Geleneksel Doljanchi Kutlaması
Bu kutlamanın 4 ana bölümü vardır:
1-) Dua etmek ve şükranlarını sunmak.
2-) Doğum gününü yapmak, giymek ve giydirmek.
3-) Masayı hazırlamak ve Toljabee'yi yapmak.
4-) Konuklar ve komşularla yiyeceği paylaşmak.
Modern zamanlarda tıp alanındaki geliştirmelerin, batı kültürünün etkisinin, modern sanayileşmenin artması ve Şamanistik kültürün etkisininin azalmasına paralel olarak Tol kutlamalarında da azalış meydana geldi. Yine de, günümüzde tebrik zamanı olarak hâlâ aile ve anne-babalar için bu kutlama yapılmaktadır.
'Doljanchi' Yiyeceği
Aile üyeleri evde Samshin'e sade pilav, yosun çorbası, pirinç kek sunarak şükreder. Parti için, ebeveynler bebek için refah bir hayati sembolize eden aşırı yığılmış yiyeceklerden özel 'Dol' masası hazırlarlar. Masa hoş gök kuşağı katmanlı pirinç keki, yosun çorbası ve meyve ile ağırlıklı olmak üzere hazırlanır. Miyeok-guk (deniz yosunu çorbası) tüm doğum gününde servis edilir.
Modern Doljanchi
Kutlama genellikle açık büfe restoranlar veya düğün salonlarında yapılır. Ebeveynler misafirler için ödüller hazırlar ve parti girdikten sonra herkese üzerinde sayı yazılan kağıt parçası alır. Parti boyunca misafirler bebek hakkındaki sorulara doğru olarak cevapladıklarında ödül kazanırlar. Partinin ev sahibi, ya da eğlendiren kimse ayrıca rastgele bir sayıyı yüksek sesle okur ve bu sayıya sahip olan kişi ödül alır.

Dol or doljanchi is a Korean tradition that celebrates the first birthday of a baby. This ceremony blesses the child with a prosperous future and has taken on great significance in Korea. The birthday babies wear a hanbok and a traditional hat: a jobawi or gulle for baby girls and a bokgeon or hogeon (호건) for baby boys.
In the past, due to a lack of medical information, Korea's seasonal temperature differences, and many childhood related diseases, the death rate for children was extremely high. Many children died before their first birthday. After the age of one year, the survival rate steeply increased, making this milestone a very happy one for the child's parents. It has also been a custom to celebrate a child's 100 day birthday (baek-il) , but in most areas this birthday is less important than the Tol and any celebrations are smaller in scale.
Tol has two meanings in Korean. The most common meaning is a child's first birthday. It can also be used as a generic description for birthdays: Chut-tol (first birthday), Du-tol (second birthday), Seo-tol (third birthday), etc.
Traditional Doljanchi Celebration
The traditional celebration had four major components:
1) Praying and giving thanks
2) Making and wearing the birthday clothes
3) Preparing the table and performing the Toljabee
4) Sharing the food with guests and neighbors
In modern times, due to the improvements in medicine, the influence of Western culture, and modern industrialization, the Shamanistic reasons for the Tol celebration have been reduced. However, the event is still celebrated as a time of congratulations for the parents and family.
In the modern Tol, taking picture is an important part of the event. As many Korean homes are very small, many families rent a room in a banquet hall. The modern celebration includes the child's parents greeting guests, lighting candles on a birthday cake, the Toljabee event, and a toast.
'Doljanchi' Food
At home family members give thanks to Samshin by serving plain rice, seaweed soup, and rice cakes. For the party, parents prepare a special 'Dol' table, where food is stacked high to symbolize a life of prosperity for the baby. The table is set mainly with a rice cake of pretty rainbow layers, seaweed soup, and fruits. Miyeok guk (seaweed soup) is served on every birthday.
Modern Doljanchi
The celebration is usually held in buffet restaurants or wedding halls. Parents prepare some prizes for guests and upon entering the party, everyone gets a piece of paper on which a number is written. During the party guests who correctly answer a question about the baby win a prize. The host of the party, or an entertainer, also calls out a number randomly, and the person who has that number receives a prize.
