A Daegam And A Thief / Daegam ve Hırsız
Profesyonel bir hırsız vardı. Komşusu hakim, bu hırsızı durdurmak ve bir daha hırsızlık yapmasına engel olmak için onu öldürmenin yolunu arıyordu. Bu sebeple hırsıza bahis oynamayı teklif etti.
“Baksana! Muhteşem çalma becerilerin olduğunu duydum. Hadi bahse girelim.”
“Öyle diyorsanız, efendim. Ne konuda bahse gireceğiz?”
“Eşimin yüzüğünü çal. Eğer yaparsan, sana toprak vereceğim. Ancak gözüm yüzükte olacak.”
“Pekâlâ, efendim. O halde yazılı bir anlaşma yapalım. Sonradan reddederseniz yapabileceğim bir şey yok.”
Böylece yazılı anlaşma yaptılar.
Hırsız evine geri döndü ve karısına hakim elbisesi dikmesini söyledi.
“Hayatım, bana giyebileceğim bir hakim elbisesi dik. O hakiminki gibi olmalı.”
“Ne için? Bu kıyafetler sadece hakimler için değil mi?”
“Dediğimi yap.”
Hırsız 3 gün hakimin evine gitmedi ki hakimin evindeki kimse uyuyamasın. Hırsız bu üç gün boyunca keyfine bakarken, hakim ne olur ne olmaz elinde silah hazır vaziyette bekliyordu.
Dördüncü gece hırsız, hakimin evinin önüne korkuluk dikti. 3 gece gözüne uyku girmemiş hakim bu korkuluğu gerçek sandı ve korkuluğa ateş açtı. Korkuluk yere düşünce hakim korktu ve eşine:
“Hayatım, ben adam öldürdüm. Üstünü örtmem lazım.”
Ve arka bahçeye gitti. Bunun üzerine, hakim kıyafetlerini giymiş hırsız, hakimin karısına doğru yürüdü:
“Hayatım, yüzüğün nerede? Yoksa kayıp mı ettin? Bana ver.”
3 gündür uyuyamamış hakim eşi, hırsızı kocası sandı ve yüzüğü ona verdi. Bir süre sonra hakim gelip:
“Yüzüğün hâlâ sende olduğundan emin ol.” deyince karısı:
“Ne yüzüğü? Az evvel sana vermemi istedin ya?”
Hakim o anda kandırıldığını anladı. Ertesi sabah hırsız, hakimin yanına geldi ve:
“Efendim, söz verdiğiniz toprağı bana verin.” dedi.
Yazılı anlaşma olduğundan dolayı hakim istemese de hırsıza toprak vermek zorunda kaldı.
Böylece hakim topraklarının bir kısmını hırsıza verdi. Bu duruma doğal olarak içerledi çünkü hırsızı öldürmek isterken bunu başaramamış, dahası ona toprak vermek zorunda kalmıştı.
Bu sebeple, hırsızı zorladı.
“Hadi bir kez daha bahse girelim.”
“Siz öyle isterseniz, elbette reddedemem. Bu seferki ne üzerine?”
“Atım üzerine. Eğer şu beyaz atı çalarsan, ben kaybetmiş olacağım. Eğer başaramazsan, seni öldüreceğim.”
“Anlıyorum. O halde yazılı anlaşma yapalım. Bu sefer bana ne vereceksin?”
“Önceki kadar toprak.”
Böylece ikinci anlaşmayı imzaladılar. Bu sefer, hırsız kendini dilenci kılığına soktu ve karısına:
“Biraz sert içki hazırla. İçeni sarhoş edecek kadar sert olsun. Ayrıca bir şişe de normal içki hazırla.”
Biftekleri, meyveleri, pirinç keklerini ve diğer şeyleri hazırladı. Hepsini alıp hakimin evinin önüne gitti. Bu arada hakim de 3 köle hazırlamış: Birinci köle atın üzerinde oturmakta, ikincisi dizginleri, üçüncüsü ise atın kuyruğunu tutmaktaymış.
Dilenci kılığına giren hırsız gidip yanlarına oturdu ve:
“Bunları doğum günü partisinden aldım geldim. Biraz burada yemek istiyorum.” dedi.
Köleler içki ve yiyeceği görünce tadına bakmak istediler. İçlerinden biri:
“Bana da biraz verebilir misin?”
“Sorun değil.”
Bunun üzerine hırsız, ona içki doldurdu. Yanında da biraz biftek verdi.
“Buyur.”
Diğerleri görünce onlar da istedi.
“Bana da. Bana da.”
Yiyip içen tüm köleler uykuya daldı. Hırsız makasını çıkardı ve atın bağlarını kesti. Atın üstündeki köleyi yere indirdi ve atı alıp evinin yolunu tuttu. Hakim atın durumuna göz atmak üzere uğradığında, 3 köleyi de uyur şekilde buldu.
“Ne yapıyorsunuz siz! At nerede!”
Köleler gözlerini açıp baktıklarında at ortada yoktu. Ertesi sabah hırsız, atı alıp hakimin evine gelince:
“Ne yapacaksınız efendim?”
“Sana verdiğim sözü tutmaktan başka ne yapabilirim ki?”
Hakim, hırsıza daha çok toprak verdi ve böylece toprağına toprak katan hırsızın bir daha hırsızlık yapmasına gerek kalmadı.

There was an excellent thief who stole very well. A judge was living next door and tried to find a reason to kill the thief so that he would never steal again. He thus suggested a bet to the thief.
"Look! I've heard that you have excellent stealing skills. Let's make a bet."
"If you say so, sir. What is the bet?"
"Steal my wife's ring. If you do that, I'll give you some land. But I'll keep an eye on the ring."
"O.K. Sir. Let's make a written contract since, if you deny it later on, there is nothing I can do about it."
They thus made a written contract.
The thief came back home and told his wife to make a court dress.
"Honey, make a court dress I can wear. But it must be the same as the judge's."
"What is it for? Isn't it only for judges?"
"Do as I say."
The thief then didn't go to the judge's house for three days so that the people in that house wouldn't be able to sleep. While the thief was just relaxing time, the judge was armed with a gun to shoot the thief in case he came in.
On the fourth night, the thief took a scarecrow and set it up in front of the judge's house. The judge who did not sleep at all for the three days mistook the scarecrow as the thief and fired at it. When the scarecrow fell down, the judge got scared and said to his wife,
"honey, I've killed a man. I have to cover it with something."
Then he walked to the back garden. When the thief disguising himself in the judge's clothes saw this, he came to the judge's wife and said,
"honey, where is your gold ring? Haven't you lost it? Give it to me."
She thought that the thief was her husband (because she didn't sleep, either, and, moreover, the thief disguised himself in the judge's clothes) and gave the ring to him to be sure. The thief naturally ran away with it. After a while, the judge came to his wife and said,
"Make sure that you still have your ring with you."
His wife said,
"What ring? Didn't you ask me to give it to you just a moment ago?"
The judge then realised that he had been deceived.
On the next morning, the thief came to see the judge.
"Sir. Please, give me the land you promised."
The judge couldn't but give him the land since he'd signed the written contract.
So the judge gave a part of the land he owned. He naturally resented this because he wanted to kill the thief, but he was unable to kill him and, moreover, he had to give away a part of his property.
Thus he fetched the thief again.
"Let's make another bet."
"If you say it, I cannot but do so. What is it this time?"
"It is my horse. If you steal that white horse, then I lose. If you won't, I'll kill you."
"I see. Let's sign for a written contract again. What would you give me this time?"
"I'll give you as much as before."
They thus signed another contract. This time, he disguised himself as a beggar. He asked his wife,
"Prepare some strong liquor. It should be strong enough for a person to be drunk. And, also, prepare another bottle of normal wine."
He then prepared beef, fruits, rice cakes, and so on. He then took them to the judge's house. In fact, the judge ordered three servants to watch it; one of them to sit on the horse, another to hold the reins, and the last to hold the mane of its tail.
However the thief disguising himself as a beggar sat near them and said,
"I got these from somebody's birthday. I'll eat some here."
When the servants saw the food and wine, they wanted to taste, in particular, the wine. So one of them said to the thief,
"Hey, will you give me some?"
"No problem."
Then the thief poured wine for him.
"Take this."
The thief gave him a glass of wine with beef steaks. The others also wanted to have some wine.
"Give me some, too."
"Me, too."
Thus all of the servants drank the strong liquor and fell asleep soon. The thief had prepared scissors and so he cut the reins and the mane with them. Then he put the servant down on the ground from the back of the horse and rode the horse home. When the judge came out to check out whether the horse was all right, he found out that the three servants were all asleep; one sitting on the ground, another holding a part of reins, and the last holding a part of the mane of the tail.
"What the hell are you doing? Where is the horse?"
The servants woke up to find that the horse was gone.
On the next morning, the thief brought the horse back to the judge's.
"What would you do sir?"
"What would I do other than keeping my promise to you?"
The judge reluctantly gave more land to the thief. The thief thus had enough land and never had to steal again.
