Hwagye-sa, 1523'te Shinwol tarafından, Chungjongu'nun hükümdarlığı esnasında kuruldu. Bu tapınak 1618'te yıkıldı ama sonraki yıllarda Dowol tarafından tekrar inşa edildi. Yabancı papaz ve Budistler hem burada çalışıyorlar hem de yaşıyorlar.
Hwagye-sa, tarihle dolu bir tapınaktır. Chosun hanedanının, kraliyet aileleri çoğunlukla, ulusun ayakta durabilmesi için bu tapınağı ziyaret etti. Tapınağın bahçesi çok güzeldir ve birçok ağaçla doludur. Hwagye-sa, Chosun hanedanının tarihini yansıtmaktadır. Birçok yetenekli Budist sanatçısı, buraya gelmiştir.
Ayrıca, tapınağın yanında bahar ile ilgili ünlü bir hikaye vardır. Bir gün bir karga kayayı gagalıyormuş. Karganın gagaladığı delikten su gelmiş ve sonunda bahar da gelmiş. Bu suyun cilde ve mide hastalıklarına çok iyi geldiği söyleniyor. Bu yüzden çoğu insan o suyu ziyaret ediyor. Bukhan-san ulusal parkında yürüyüşe çıkan kimse burayı ziyaret etmeden duramaz.

Hwagye-sa was founded by Master Shinwol in 1523, during the reign of King Chungjong of the ChosuChosensty. It was burnt down in 1618 and was rebuilt the following year by Master Dowol.Although not a very big temple compared to other famous ones, Hwagye-sa is full of history.Its garden is very beautiful and is filled with many trees and the buildings preserve the style of the late Chosun Dynasty.Many talented Buddhist artists came from here.Moreover, there is a famous story about a spring near the temple. One day a crow pecked at a rock. Water came from the hole where it pecked and eventually became a spring. It is believed that the water is very good for skin and stomach diseases, so many people visit to drink the water. Many hikers in Bukhan-san National Park also visit the spring.
